Yippee Project

Play and leisure provision for disabled children

yippee9We believe that all children have the right to play, regardless of their individual ability.  That is why we provide support staff within all our playschemes and afterschool activities, to allow disabled children to take part.  Click to children’s services front page.

For children aged 5-11, with more profound disability and complex needs, we offer specialised play provision through our Yippee Saturday Club and Yippee holiday playschemes.

Thanks to significant funding from Surrey County Council’s Aiming High for Disabled Children programme, we are extending our Yippee Playschemes and introducing a new Yip4Youth project for disabled young people.

BBC Children in Need has funded a Yippee Project Leader, to deliver Yippee playschemes, through a three-year grant.

Challenge participants, who challenge themselves physically and emotionally to complete our walking, running, trekking and cycling events,  raised over £30,000 in sponsorship for our Challenge Fund.  This has been used to buy specialist equipment for disabled children and pay for specially trained staff to deliver Yippee Playschemes.

Activities include bouncy castle, soft play, giant trampoline and sensory room as well as specially designed toys and games.  Boccia (disability sports) sessions and day trips to the local petting farm, park or swimming, ensure that disabled children experience sensory stimulation.

All staff are trained in meeting the needs of disabled children and have special training in behaviour management (NCVI) and communication methods, such as Makaton.

A high ratio of staff to child, ensures each child receives the support they need and young volunteer play buddies help create a lively and fun atmosphere.

Saturday Club

25 children each Saturday enjoy a range of play activities between 10am and 4pm at both the YMCA and Banstead Youth Centre, during term time.

Holiday Playschemes

We now offer Yippee Holiday Playschemes during all 13 weeks of the school holidays, ensuring disabled children can play with friends and try out new activities, whilst giving families some support.

Thanks to recent funding we can now offer a pick up/drop off service to families who would otherwise not be able to access Yippee play activities.
