Just keep moving!

ffl2

Aged 16 to 90, have a physical disability or serious health condition?  Then Fit for Life offers you a chance to have a healthy lifestyle through effective and safe exercise in a friendly and supportive environment.  Attend our fully accessible fitness gym, specially designed exercise classes or disability sports sessions, keeping physically active is what’s important.

Our staff are qualified to British Association for Cardiac Rehabilitation (BACR) Phase IV and specialise in helping people recovering from heart conditions to take exercise, which is proven to reduce the likelihood of further attacks.

What’s more, as well as improved mobility, strength and co-ordination, exercise can give people who are unable to study or work, a renewed sense of purpose in life.  Getting out of the house, meeting new people and working towards personal goals can transform the lives of those affected by disability or ill-health.

Going into a gym for the first time can be daunting for anyone, so you’ll be met by one of our specially trained FFL instructors who will understand any worries you might have and support you all the way.

Who can join in?

Disabled people or those with coronary heart disease, diabetes mellitus, strokes and mental health problems. It’s best to get a referral letter from your GP, social worker or physiotherapist before joining Fit for Life sessions, so we know about your general health and any specific considerations before you start.  You can refer yourself to the project for assessment by our qualified staff and we will contact your doctor for you.

450 Fit for Life members visited the fitness centre 10,500 times last year.

The British Heart Foundation reports that cardiac rehabilitation can reduce the chances of dying prematurely of heart disease by 26%.

Case study

Jade was a happy-go-lucky 18 year old until a devastating day in March 2007 when a terrible car accident left her with severe injuries.  Jade says, after 2 months in hospital and hours of physio I was left will lots of problems, including difficulty walking.  I jointed the Fit for Life programme and although I was worried I might get funny looks, I immediately felt like I fitted in. Fit for Life helped me improve physically and got my life back on track.’
