That Friday Night Thing!

Sports and Social is a sports based youth club for young people with learning disabilities that aims to provide opportunities for young people to develop new skills, make new friends and become more socially independent.  The club runs on Friday evenings (from 7-9pm) and offers a programme of youth led sports and visits out. The aim is to offer a relaxed social atmosphere where young people can enjoy each other’s company and try out fun and exciting new activities.

Surrey County Council’s ‘Youth Development Service’ provided funding to run the club more frequently and additional funding comes from Mencap

We aim to make the club as inclusive as possible by going out and taking part in mainstream activities like gym workouts, bowling, golf at the driving range and trips to Brighton.  Y Mania our nightclub event, developed from young people at Sports and Social telling us this is what they wanted.

Many young people with disability have less independence than their peers and are unable to experience social events in quite the same way as other young people.

The club is run in partnership with Mencap and over 30 young people, aged 16-25, are regular attendees of the club. Some of our younger members came in contact with the YMCA through inclusive play schemes. Most live at home with their parents although some live in residential care.

For more information or if you would like to attend the club please contact  Katie Gatt on  01737 779979 or  email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

846 volunteer hours and still counting!

When Kez, a 22 year old man with Asperger’s Syndrome first came to the Sports and Social Club he was shy and withdrawn.  Over time he has made friends and grown in confidence and he now volunteers for the YMCA, read more.

Young people attending Sports and Social raised £10,000 towards a new minibus with wheelchair access, by successfully applying to the Youth Capital Fund for a grant for Y-Wheels!

This takes them on trips out to the coffee shop, pub or on day trips.
