Helping others whilst also helping yourself

R&R YMCA has a strong tradition of volunteering. The Board of Management who are responsible for the governance of the YMCA are all volunteers, as our many of our most valued helpers.
Volunteering is a great way for people to develop confidence and can provide a stepping stone to a job and a career. It can enable people to develop potential whilst offering community benefits.
The YMCA offers a number of specific volunteering schemes across Surrey. These include the vinvolved project which is part of a national programme of youth volunteering funded by the charity v. Young people are supported to volunteer for the benefit of others and also to engage in youth led initiatives to encourage wider take up of volunteering across Surrey.
For the past eight years the YMCA has also provided a structured Volunteer Playleader scheme for young people that includes a fun and comprehensive training scheme followed by a commitment to work with young children on a YMCA holiday playscheme
For adults with disability, volunteering can provide them with a sense of purpose and value. Fitness Pioneers offers volunteer opportunities for those with a physical disability or chronic ill health and Active Living is for adults with a learning disability. Volunteers train as sports leaders and fitness instructors, gaining accredited qualifications, then deliver exercise sessions for their peers, acting as positive role models.
846 volunteer hours and still counting!
When Kez, a 22 year old man with Asperger’s Syndrome first came to the Sports and Social Club he was shy and withdrawn. Over time he has made friends and grown in confidence and he now volunteers for the YMCA, read more.
Volunteers at the YMCA are highly valued and their training, development and welfare is taken extremely seriously. Thanks to a grant of £2,500 from Gatwick Airport Community Trust we were able to train two intakes of volunteer Playleaders. These young people undergo comprehensive training to equip them with the skills needed to ‘buddy’ disabled children during our playschemes. |
